What’s TrailX all about?
TrailX events are competitive, off road fun. Our trail duathlon events are becoming renowned for their challenging but really rewarding off road routes, both the running and the mountain bike courses see you pushing yourself against the terrain, one minute you’ll be whizzing through twisting single track, daring yourself to go faster and faster round the corners (don’t get too carried away…) and the next you’ll be gasping for air as you power your way along the next fire road – don’t worry a feed station won’t be far way!
New for 2018 is the TrailX day of off road running! Hosted on the South Downs Way at the private estate at Matterley Basin. There are 2km, 5km and 10km routes, all within the private venue that hosts the British Motocross GP and Boomtown Music Festival.

Off Road Duathlons
TrailX Sprint & Youth Trail Duathlon - Checkendon - 28 April
TrailX Sprint & Youth Trail Duathlon – 28 April 2018
Hammonds Farm, Checkendon – RG8 0NTPrices, Schedule & Entry
The Course – This sprint trail duathlon is held on a nice and compact venue that’s relatively flat, making it great for both beginners and more experienced competitors. The 2017 race was unbelievably close. In both the male and female races, the top 2 were separated by under 12 seconds, and the leaders changed multiple times throughout.
TrailX Sprint Duathlon – Anyone over 16 can take part in this 3.1km run that crosses fields, twisty woodland single track and a very quiet country lane. As is duathlon tradition, the run route will be completed both before and after the bike section. The bike course is completely off-road, super-fast and races its way round the twisty trails of Hammonds Wood. As a result of last year’s feedback, you’ve now got an extra fire road so there’s additional opportunity to take on food and drink. The bike course will be ridden 4 times, giving a total distance of 15km.
TrailX Youth Duathlon – This is open to anyone aged between 12 and 15. The event will use the same run course as above but will not include the country lane, meaning the run will be 2.7km. The youth entrants will race on the same bike course, but will complete just 2 laps.
Fun Fact – Local rumour (and a bit of googling) suggests that a small procession of ghostly nuns use the paths around the woods for their evening exercise…watch out if you’re camping!
All Age TrailX Off Road Duathlon - Crow Hill - 26 May
All Age TrailX Off Road Duathlon – 26 May 2018
Crow Hill, Ringwood – BH24 3DAPrices, Schedule & Entry
The Course – For 2018, Trail X will have racing for all age groups at Crow Hill, including the under 12s! The run and bike courses for Full X and Half X will make use of the great mix of single track and fire roads that this venue has to offer, and there are plenty of ups and downs to keep you on your toes! The courses for Mini X will be close to the arena utilising the easy access woodland and open fields. Exact layouts of the courses are still being worked on, so any maps you may see on social media or on here are still approximate.
Full X Off Road Duathlon – The Full X race is open to those aged 16 and upwards. It will consist of a 5km run, followed by between 16 – 20km on your mountain bike and then finishes with another 5km run.
Half X Off Road Duathlon – As the name would suggest, Half X is half the distance of the Full X race but follows the same format. Those over the age of 13 can compete in Half X.
Mini X Off Road Duathlon – Mini X is for our future off road stars! All kids between the ages of 8 and 12 are invited to come and show us how it’s done. Distances are still to be confirmed, but we’re aiming for a race of about 20 minutes in length for the leader.
Fun Fact – Legend has it, that in the mid 1700’s Smugglers used an unofficial track, that still circumnavigates the race course, to move contraband inland from the coast. You may notice ‘Smugglers car park’ on the left as you approach the venue.
All Age Trail Running - Matterley - 14 July
All Age Trail Running – 14 July 2018
Matterley, Winchester – SO24 0HYPrices, Schedule & Entry
The Course – Matterley Basin is situated on the top of the South Downs. It’s blessed with stunning views to distract you from achy legs, and varied terrain to keep you thinking. Regardless of which distance you choose to run you’ll enjoy a fully marked route that will twist along woodland trails, whizz across farmland and hammer up and down gravel tracks. There will be plenty of aid stations with water and some sugary goodness to keep you going.
The exact routes are yet to be confirmed so the following distances may alter very slightly.
2km Run – Anyone aged 5 years and upwards can participate in this event, but any under 8s must be accompanied by an adult.
5km Run – The 5km event is open to ages 12 years and older.
10km Run – This race is for participants aged 16 and over.
Fun Fact – Long before Boomtown, the MXGP or even TrailX made Matterley their home, there were some pretty big things going on in the Basin. In 1944 General Eisenhower, who went on to become President of the USA, addressed the allied forces in the Bowl before the D-Day Landings.
